"Equine Veterinarians Australia - Helping Vets Help Horses"

Welcome to the website of the Equine Veterinarians Australia (EVA)
The EVA website is here to provide access to relevant resource and educational material that is important to equine veterinarians and horse owners.Equine Veterinarians Australia (EVA) is a Special Interest Group (SIG) of the Australian Veterinary Association. The EVA is a not for profit organisation that is comprised of a membership of equine veterinarians from across Australia. The EVA services the needs of these members and also acts as a representative body for the interests of equine veterinarians within the Australian equestrian communities. The EVA also advises upon horse health issues as an active stakeholder in the equine industry. The EVA is in the business of elevating standards, furthering research and knowledge, developing post-graduate equine veterinary continuing education and promoting its core resources among its members and to community. Whilst this website is primarily intended as a service for members of the EVA, we also hope this website will prove useful to members of the public who have an interest in horses. I hope that you enjoy the EVA website.

EVA and AVA to ATTEND NATIONAL FORUM ON EI

This meeting entitled - A NATIONAL DISCUSSION: EQUINE BIOSECURITY – MANAGING THE RISK OF AND RESPONDING TO A FUTURE INCURSION OF EQUINE INFLUENZA is to be held on Thursday, 25 September, 2008 at the Sydney Room in the The Menzies Hotel, Sydney.

It will be chaired by Associate Professor, Andrew Vizard, Veterinary Epidemiology, Faculty of Veterinary Science, University of Melbourne and Director, Animal Health Australia.

This meeting is the first chance ALL the key horse industry stakeholders will come together to focus on possible future pathways for managing any EI incursions.

Questions for Groups Discussion:

1. What was your experience with EI? What was the effect of EI (the disease and response) on your business / horse usage?
2. What do you consider to be the major risk factors to be managed to avoid any future inclusion of EI into the national horse population? How should each of these risk factors be managed?
3. If a future incursion occurred, what would you prefer to see happen – nothing or something; if something, what response / outcome would you expect?

These questions will be considered by all participants after a number of key addresses by technical experts that were involved with the disease reponse

VALE - Dr Ben Cunneen

We are deeply saddened at the news of Dr Ben Cunneens' death, as a result of contracting Hendra virus. Our thoughts are with Ben's wife, his family and friends during this difficult time. AVA and EVA has been doing all we can to assist Redlands Veterinary Clinic and those affected by the outbreak. As reported in an earlier eNews, Redlands has received assistance to care for the horses currently under quarantine at the practice. We will continue to keep members informed on Hendra developments subject to privacy and confidentiality considerations. Members are reminded that AVA's confidential telephone support and counselling service is available for your use on 1800 337 068. For more Hendra virus resources for members please go here
